As a nonprofit university, SNHU has some of the lowest online tuition in the nation. For more than 90 years, our mission has been to expand access to higher education to those for whom college is not a guarantee. Here are the numbers:

Financial aid refers to the funding a student receives to help pay for their college education. Common examples include, but are not limited to, federal student aid in the form of federal loans and grants, work-study, private loans and scholarships.
This year, millions of college students will qualify for federal financial aid for having completed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA. At SNHU, we recommend you complete the FAFSA to see if you qualify for financial aid in the form of:
As part of our educational mission, SNHU wants to ensure that each student is fully informed about the different types of financial aid available and that federal loans (and all other loans) have to be paid back.
Note: SNHU's school code for the FAFSA is 002580.
*Students who fail to complete the academic period for which the Federal Pell Grant was offered may be asked to pay back a portion of the grant.
It can be confusing!
In order to qualify for financial aid at SNHU, students need to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, at StudentAid.Gov. But on the StudentAid.Gov. website, there are often two FAFSA financial aid form years to choose from. Which one do you need to complete as an online student at SNHU?.
It’s determined by the month you’re starting your first term within a financial aid year. Use the chart on this page to see the FAFSA financial aid year you should use.
Tuition payments are due prior to term start. Failure to pay your tuition balance on time could result in a financial hold being placed on your account and deregistration from future course(s).
At Southern New Hampshire University, you have several options for funding your education, including federal student aid, employer tuition assistance programs, private loans, external scholarships and personal financing (upfront out-of-pocket payments, payment plans, etc.).
To apply for federal student aid, you must fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which is available at studentaid.gov. Each year, the FAFSA for the following academic year becomes available between October 1 and December 31. The earlier you apply, the greater the number of grants and scholarships you may qualify for, and the more time you have to gather your funding.
Completing the FAFSA online takes most people about 30 minutes. SNHU's school code is 002580. If you need assistance with filling out your FAFSA, contact SNHU's Student Financial Services at 877.455.7648.
To be eligible for Federal Direct Loans, students must be enrolled at least halftime. For an undergraduate student, this is equivalent to two courses over a 16-week trimester (two consecutive eight-week terms). For a graduate student, this equals one course per 10-week term.
*Students who fail to complete the academic period for which the Federal Pell Grant was offered may be asked to pay back a portion of the grant.
Within 1-3 business days of filing your FAFSA, you will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) that summarizes the information on your FAFSA. Within 3-5 business days of filing, any schools you listed on your FAFSA will receive a similar report, which they will then use to determine your financial aid offer.
Note that your SAR is not necessarily final. More information may be needed to verify the information on your FAFSA, so be sure to monitor your email for potential next steps from SNHU.
Federal student aid consists of both loans and grants. Student Financial Services verifies your eligibility for financial aid and creates an offer based on factors such as federal and state regulations, and institutional policy.
Your financial aid offer may include both grants and loans you're eligible for based on the information you provided in your FAFSA. Know that you'll always be considered for grants first and loans last. However, just because you've qualified for loans doesn't mean you need to accept them.
Reach out to Student Financial Services at 877.455.7648 if you have questions about how your financial aid offer was calculated.
A book voucher, which is typically financed through student loans, allows you to purchase your course
materials through SNHU’s online bookstore. Book vouchers are sent to students registered for online
courses and whose financial aid exceeds their cost of attendance at SNHU.
Keep in mind that you are not required to use your book voucher — you can pay out of pocket instead.
Up to six weeks prior to term start, registered students using financial aid will receive an email to their SNHU account that contains instructions on how to access their book vouchers.
Students who register sooner than 6 weeks prior to term start and are determined to be eligible for a book voucher will receive the email 1-3 days after that 6-week mark.
If you are registered for the required minimum number of credits and have completed all the steps necessary to accepting the financial aid offered to you, your federal student aid (including grants and loans) will disburse to your account during the third week of the term.
A credit balance occurs when payments made to your account exceed the amount you owe for tuition and course materials. The amount of your financial aid credit balance will be equal to the difference between the amount of federal student aid you accept and the charges on your student account.
Keep in mind that there is a limit to the amount of Direct Loans you can borrow in your lifetime, and it's part of our mission at SNHU to help you minimize your student loan debt.
Reach out to Student Financial Services at 877.455.7648 to explore options for reducing the amount of loans you borrow.
All financial aid credit balances are subject to review based on federal eligibility requirements. This process takes no longer than 14 days from the date that funds are disbursed and often is completed much sooner.
Financial aid refunds are typically sent to BankMobile Disbursements in the fourth week of each term. You will receive an email to your SNHU account once BankMobile Disbursements has received your funds and they become available for your use.
BankMobile is a third-party bank that SNHU partners with to ensure students using financial aid have access to their excess loan funding as quickly as possible. If a credit balance is created from disbursement of financial aid, it will be processed through BankMobile within 14 days. There are two refund options available through BankMobile:
If eligible, you will receive a Refund Selection Kit in the mail, so you can select your preference.
