Financial Aid 101

(Don't fear the FAFSA®)

No matter where you end up going to school, SNHU wants you to understand the basics of tuition funding options and financial aid.

We’ve compiled answers to some of the most frequently asked questions using information and videos from the U.S. Department of Education's office of Federal Student Aid. Enjoy!

What is Federal Student Aid?

Providing more than $120 billion in financial aid* to help students pay for college each year, the office of Federal Student Aid is the nation’s largest provider of loans, grants and work-study funds. We recommend all students complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. Here are some key takeaways:

  • Grants —  DO NOT have to be paid back (only undergraduate students are eligible to receive federal grants)
  • Federal LoansDO have to be paid back

How do I apply for Federal Student Aid?

To receive federal student aid, you’ll first need to fill out the free application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The information you provide will be used to determine how much financial aid you can receive. No matter where you decide to earn your degree, you’ll want to fill out the FAFSA. You can list each college you’re interested in on the same application.

SNHU’s school code is 002580.

What do I need to complete the FAFSA?

The FAFSA is available online and requires you to provide personal information, financial information and any parent information if you’re a dependent. This means you’ll need to gather some paperwork like your social security number, W-2 and tax records. Completing this form should take less than 30 minutes and is 100% free.

What happens next?

After completing your FAFSA, you’ll receive a student aid report summarizing the information you submitted. SNHU will use this information to put together an aid package explaining what kind of financial aid is being offered and how much.
